This Week in Lit: Frances Fox Piven, the Evils of Technology and Hooked on Comix 3

This week we have a variety of talent for you to check out! Enjoy your hot, crazy Summer...

Gary J. Handwerk, Kevin R. Nelson and Rogers M. Smith at University of Washington Book Store:
Everyone had that roommate in college who they couldn’t help but argue with—whether because of too many glasses of wine, or the cookies they wouldn’t stop stealing. Gary Handwerk, Kevin Nelson and Rogers Smith were freshman college roommates—but they focused their arguments on the biggies, like philosophy, politics and religion. Now they’re successful professors (of various subjects), and each will bring their published books…and their fighting spirits! You can grab an autographed copy of their books after the event.

Monday, 7 p.m. // University of Washington Book Store // Free

Alex Shakar at Elliott Bay Book Co.:
Alex Shakar has a new novel— luminarium_large.jpg Luminarium, which is set in 2006 and sounds like a fascinating ride through a world thrown asunder by technology and lack of faith. Dave Eggers has even called it “…funny, and soulful…but so intellectually invigorating that you’ll want to read it twice”. A book about the meaning of life, and an evening with a brilliant, sharp writer.

Wednesday, 7 p.m. // Elliott Bay Book Co. // Free

Frances Fox Piven at Elliott Bay Book Co.:
Frances Fox Piven, Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Sociology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York (wow, that’s a mouthful), will be making a special appearance! This intriguing mind—known for her study of class, poverty and social justice movements, will guarantee a mesmerizing evening.

Thursday, 7 p.m. // Elliott Bay Book Co. // Free

Silence & Communication Group Reading:
Inspired by the works of John Cage, twenty-two writers are giving their all (or at least two minutes of it) to explore the theme of “Silence and Communication” at Sole Repair. You’re guaranteed some dynamic, and crazy entertaining antics from voices from the Pacific Northwest and otherwise—as well as one hell of a celebration for Seattle’s literary community. PageBoy, Hoarse, Pilot Books, Wave Books, and Dark Coast Press will be hanging out…you probably should be also.

Thursday, 7 p.m. // Sole Repair // $5 admission

Preview of Hooked on Comix 3 at Fantagraphics:
Another event at Fantagraphics! And this time it’s a sneak preview of Hooked on Comix 3 with filmmakers David P. Moore and Audry Mandelbaum. This documentary series on alternative comix will be continuously screening during the event—and since it’s featuring talented folk like Dame Darcy and Tony Millionaire…it’s going to be a winner.

Saturday, 12-3 p.m. // Fantagraphics // Free
