Jewish Short Stories Kick Off Town Hall's Literary Season

JewShrtStor.jpg Labor Day looms especially large in Seattle. Capping off a summer often too late in arriving and always too beautiful for words, Labor Day is the horizon line Seattleites are unable to see past. From the perspective of these last days of summer, there is no fall, which means that events lying in the rain shadow of Labor Day are easily missed.

That would be a tragedy in the case of Short Stories Live: The Jewish Imagination, Part 2 at Town Hall on Sunday September 11 at 4pm. Short Stories Live is a regular co-production of Town Hall Seattle and ACT and the first event in Town Hall's literary season. This iteration of Short Stories Live picks up where last season left off, with short stories from Jewish authors selected by ACT Artistic Director Kurt Beattie and presented in a style similar to NPR's popular Selected Shorts (and with a clear nod to Leonard Nimoy and KCRW's Jewish Short Stories). Christine Sumption, resident dramaturg at Hedgebrook and faculty at Seattle University and Cornish College of the Arts, directs.

Short Stories Live brings an impressive line-up of talent to the stage as well, with some of Seattle's best-known actors as readers:

- Bernard Malamud's The Angel Levine performed by David Silverman and Anthony Leroy Fuller. Silverman has over 30 years of experience on Seattle stages, as well as being the most sought-after charity auctioneer in town. Fuller most recently appeared in ACT's production of Pilgrims Musa and Sheri in the New World.

- Getzel the Monkey by Polish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer will be read by Julie Briskman, who turned heads last fall as newspaper therapist Ann Landers in ACT's The Lady With All the Answers.

- Chris Ensweiler tackles Nathan Englander's For the Relief of Unbearable Urges. Ensweiler could be found performing Comedy of Errors with Wooden O in parks this summer, and managed multiple roles in Jackie & Me at Seattle Children's Theatre this past spring.

Advance tickets to Town Hall's first literary event of the season at $13, or $10 for Town Hall members, senior citizens and students at Brown Paper Tickets or by calling 800-838-6000. ACT Members can reserve tickets as part of the ACTPass and Charter Membership by calling 206-292-7676.
