Get Your Labor Day Reading Now: Libraries Closed Next Week

Just a friendly warning from your book-loving friends here at Seattlest: if you were planning on picking up some final summertime reading next weekend, you'll be out of luck.

Due to citywide cuts to the budget, all of Seattle's Public Libraries will be locking their doors and taking a very long, unpaid weekend, beginning Monday, Aug. 29 and re-opening on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Yes, that's a full week of no library time.

During the closures, all book drops will be locked, but no fines will be charged. Additionally, there will be limited access to the library's web services, all library parking and parking garages will be closed, and the awesome-sounding-but-not-as-cool-in-practice Text a Librarian service will be offline.

These closures will also impact job seekers who use the computers and wireless internet that the libraries provide, so anyone who was intending to use the library for that purpose is advised to head to neighborhood centers in Ballard or Lake City which, while they operate in partnership with the libraries, will remain open.
