Can't Miss It: Thursday
120bpm:If your week has been anything like ours, you need to get your body moving. Fortuitous, then, that Deadmau5 is playing the Paramount tonight. Last time he was here, also at the Paramount, he sold the place out, and not a single seat was being used. As this interview on the STG site makes clear, Joel Zimmerman (Deadmau5's alter ego) takes pride in what he does, and we owe it to ourselves to let ourselves be moved by it. We don't know about you, but we need it.
Tonight at 7:00p.m. // The Paramount Theater, 911 Pine Street // $50
Refreshing Poesy: While slam poetry grabs all the attention, the pleasure of its direct ascendant are still plentiful and available to all; regular poetry doesn't garner the limelight as much as it used to. But the majesty of a well-turned phrase, an observed truth, and the use of language to express both meaning and feeling has never gone away. Tonight at Sole Repair Shop on Capitol Hill, The Off Hours Reading Series returns with Summer Reading -- a night of readings featuring the prose of Matt Briggs and Eleanor Lee, as well as the poetry of Jonathan Crimmins and Ellen Welcker. The evening's performance is followed by an afterparty, a great chance to meet the participants.
Tonight, doors open at 6:30p.m. show begins at 7:00p.m. // Sole Repair Shop, 1001 East Pike Street // $5
Les Miz Turns 25: "Master of the House" was a pivotal reference/plot point in an episode of Seinfeld and Trey Parker and Matt Stone payed massive homage to the musical in the South Park movie...there aren't many lives that haven't been touched by Les Miserables in the 25 years since it opened. It is now the 3rd longest running musical on Broadway, and celebrated its quarter century mark by being produced by three difference companies within the same city. It holds the same power over us as the Victor Hugo novel that once captivated France in the 19th Century, and for good reason: It's hard not to relate to the dire environment and situations the characters find themselves in, though no matter what fate brings, the characters live to fight on. It's an uplifting affair; the national touring production is in residence at the 5th Avenue Theater for a couple of weeks longer, don't miss it.
Tonight at 8:00p.m. (the production runs through August 27) // 5th Avenue Theater, 1308 Fifth Avenue // $99 - $159
