Isaiah Kalebu Gets Life in Prison

We didn't want to post another picture of Isaiah Kalebu's face. So we're using this instead. Hall of Justice by Asher Blue from the Seattlest Flickr pool.
Today, over a month after being convicted of raping and murdering Teresa Butz and attempting to murder her partner in their South Park home 2 years ago, Isaiah Kalebu has been sentenced to life without parole.

The sentencing, which was broadcast on KIRO TV, was marked by Kalebu's signature brand of profanity and hatred. It was unsurprising--his frequent outbursts resulted in his being banned from the courtroom during his own trial, and were the reason why he was not actually in the room during sentencing this afternoon.

Kalebu was not only sentenced to a life sentence for the murder, he was also given 2 additional 47-year sentences for the rape of both women. His lawyers have already said they will appeal the charges, but after Kalebu's unstable behavior, it's unlikely that the appeals will gain much traction.

Despite the fact that Kalebu didn't pursue a plea of mental defect, the death penalty was considered because of his history of unstable behavior and mental illness.

Butz's partner, who had remained unnamed to the public until this week's edition of the Stranger, wrote a powerful piece about her experience, in which she reveals herself to be Jennifer Hopper. We strongly encourage every single person on this planet to read this piece.
