Yes You Can Can: Can-It-Forward Day at Pike Place Market

farmers market 027.JPG Can you can? Of course you can--and Canning Across American wants you to embrace it.

A nationwide ad hoc collective of cooks, gardeners and food lovers (myself included), Canning Across America is committed to the revival of the lost art of putting up food through safe food preservation and community building. And for the third season, Canning Across America is encouraging folks nationwide to put up some summer goodness to enjoy this winter.

This year, Canning Across America is partnering with Ball to present the first National Can-It-Forward Day at Pike Place Market.

Founder and Seattle transplant Kim O'Donnel, who's a host on Culinate as well as the author of The Meat Lover's Meatless Cookbook, created the group organically--on Twitter. She had a pang to can and put a call out to her followers, in search of others who might be interested in canning and promoting food preservation. And the rest, as they say, is history.

You can expect giveaways, samples and best of all - plenty of schooling on how to capture those delectable summer flavors in a jar to savor on a dark winter night.

The day-long event runs from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. on August 13 at Pike Place Market, and is free and open to the public. Some highlights of the day include:

  • Canned Tomatoes with Philippe Thomelin of Olivar Restaurant
  • Mixed Berry Jam Canning with Kelsey Angell of Pink Door Restaurant
  • Kosher Pickles with Judith Dern, Allrecipes.com and Diane LaVonne of Diane's Market Kitchen

If you can't make it to the Market, not to worry--you can watch all the going ons at Can-It-Forward Day's Web TV stream. For more details visit Canning Across America's website.

Go on. Put 'em up.
