Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter Play Showbox at the Market Tonight
Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter
It’s been four years since Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter released their critically acclaimed Like, Love, Lust & the Open Halls of the Soul. While primary songwriter Jesse Sykes admits the group is deliberate in the recording studio, personal events have largely been responsible for the delay. Sykes and Phil Wandscher, the band’s guitarist, ended a romantic relationship in 2009—ten years after meeting one another in a Ballard dive bar.
While their musical partnership has survived the breakup, Sykes suggests she and Wandscher needed time to allow the new record to develop. Marble Son, the band’s fourth full-length, is a tempestuous effort that explores dark terrain—an album marked by deep embroiled guitars, hushed vocals, and spooked arrangements. The record also features songs sure to please fans of the band’s signature alt-country sound.
Sykes has called Seattle home for 20 years, and tonight’s concert at Showbox at the Market is a record release show. Come out to hear a new collection of songs from one our city’s biggest talents in the midst of transformation. The Sadies Open.
