Can't Miss It: Thursday
SWEET NIGHT: Longtime, yet former, Seattleite Jesse Sykes is in town to celebrate the release of her new album, Marble Son (Barsuk). Though Sykes saw success in the alt-country world, she’s ventured into the psychedelic realm with Marble Son, undoubtedly influenced by her time spent with art-metal groups Boris and Sunn O)). So far, the LP’s earned plenty of high praise -- called cavernous, complex, and roaring. We foresee an expansive, dark, deep and satisfying set from Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter. The Sadies open.
7:00 p.m. // Showbox at the Market // $20-$23
SURRENDER YOUR NAPS!: Here’s something no one in the Seattle area could miss. Those death-defying, window-rattling, carbon-emitting, blue-colored F/A-18 Hornets, otherwise known as angels, have returned to the Jet City for their annual Seafair appearances this weekend. But the air show entertainment really begins today when the Blue Angels take to the Seattle skies for a couple of practice runs. Pro tip: The first run is normally on the lame side - the second will be more fun. Each run comes with a closure to the I-90 bridge. The first is from 9:45 a.m. - noon, the second from 1:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
10 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. // Up // Free
OFFHAND: Summer is shaping up - what that shape will be, we still aren’t sure - and the summer dance festivities continue with the two-day improvisational dance concert, Off the Cuff. Part of the 18th annual, week-long Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation, each of Off the Cuff’s two performances features a different lineup of national and international dance artists. Tonight’s card offers performances by artists from WA, OR, NY, CA, and Sweden.
8:00 p.m. // Broadway Performance Hall 1625 Broadway // $15 or $25
