This Week in Lit: Booze, Babies and Booming Voices
We’ve got a live one this week! So much to cram into so few days—from drinking and dancing to discussing Rad Dads and enjoying some tunes
get ready for your week in Lit!
John Burnham Schwartz at Microsoft Auditorium, Seattle Public Central Library:
Brought to you by the Washington Center for the Book—it’s an evening with the author of Reservation Road, John Burnham Schwartz! He’s back with his characters and his wit in Northwest Corner, a novel about redemption and the complicated twists of life. Bursting with the lively, realistic and haunting characters that have made his work so acclaimed, you can get into the reading on a first-come, first-serve basis
so I’d scoot it on over.
Monday, 7 p.m. // Microsoft Auditorium, Seattle Central Library // Free
KCTS presents: Prohibition with Filmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, and author Daniel Okrent at the Intiman Theatre at Seattle Center:
Any reason to party like it’s the Roaring 1920s, is reason enough for me—which is why this evening at Intiman Theatre is kind of exciting. You can join the filmmakers of Prohibition for a sneak peek of their latest film (which airs on KCTS in October), and also discuss Daniel Okrent’s book, Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition. Even BETTER is the party that starts after—custom cocktails, jazz from Seattle’s Holotradband, and some wild speakeasy spirit.
Tuesday, 7 p.m. // Intiman Theatre at Seattle Center // $7 from brownpapertickets.com or $10 at the door
Reading Party at Richard Hugo House:
Tonight’s reading celebrates the publication of Rad Dad: Dispatches from the Frontiers of Fatherhood, edited by Toma Moniz, author of the popular zine that bears the same name! At last an honest view of parenting (so I hear)—in all its beauty and discomfort. Writers in this book touch on everything from equal parenting with one’s partner, to the challenges of gay fathers, sperm donors and others. Other writers will also be on hand for the reading—Corbin Lewars, author of Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making, Jennifer Munro of The Erotica Writer’s Husband & Other Stories, and cartoonist and illustrator MarĂ© Odomo. And the bar will be open! All is well.
Thursday, 7 p.m. // Richard Hugo House // Free
The Stranger presents A Very Humiliating Evening with Wayne Koestenbaum & Friends at Chop Suey (21+):
An evening of chaos and awesomeness—and a night celebrating poet Wayne Koestenbaum’s new book, Humiliation. The night will also be featuring stories from Buffalo Madonna from Mad Rad, a unique set by Tacocat, standup comedy and more! Koestenbaum has also authored Anna Moffo and other Poems, The Queen’s Throat (and much more), and currently teaches at CUNY Graduate Center and Yale School of Art.
Thursday, 8 p.m. // Chop Suey // $5 via www.thestrangertickets.com
