Seattle Cinema Round-Up: Stay Out Of The Sun Edition

The sun may be shining over Seattle for another 15 minutes or so, but don't fret! Local agoraphobics still have plenty of options. Here's a quick look at this week's offerings in The Great Indoors.

Rear Window (Fundraiser Event)
Grand Illusion Cinema (Tonight, 6:30 and 9:30 PM)
If Rear Window isn't Alfred Hitchcock's greatest film, it almost certainly has to be his most influential. Spawning countless spoofs and remakes ever since its 1954 release, Rear Window tells of the thoroughly immobile adventures of Jimmy Stewart's crippled journalist and Grace Kelly's enthusiastic love interest as they manage to spin a tail more emotionally investing than a thousand CGI robots hitting each other with laser swords and blowing up buildings. If that weren't enough, Grand Illusion is also putting on a silent auction with prizes from The Criterion Collection, Northwest Film Forum and many more. Even if you are somehow turned off to Hitchcock or the non-verbal raising of prices of things, the night's $25 entry fee certainly makes a difference in the support of Seattle's oldest continuously running movie theater.

Page One: Inside the New York Times/Cave of Forgotten Dreams
Crest Cinema Center (July 30th-August 4th)
It would appear to be documentary season at Crest right now, so I would wholly recommend taking this opportunity to beef up on your knowledge of cave paintings and editorial staffs (I like cake and professional wrestling!). Make it a double feature day with Werner Herzog's insightful look at France's carefully guarded Chauvet Cave and a documentary that puts a spotlight on perhaps the most talked about newspaper in the history of the medium as they face down the daunting paradigm shift of online journalism (sorry dudes). The best part: ponying up for both Crest showings still only costs you half the money you'd spend getting a severe migraine in front of whatever new 3D comic book adaptation might've come out yesterday.

Galaxy Quest
Central Cinema (Tonight and Tomorrow, 7:00)
If you don't have the guts to show up for Monday's off-the-wall installment of Collide-O-Scope or Wednesday's epic Pop Princess Sing Along, take in this criminally underrated Sci-Fi spoof that may very well be Tim Allen's finest non-G-rated performance. Regardless of your thoughts on the Home Improvement impresario, it's an action-packed week for the Central Cinema, and a perfect time to catch up on the ever-improving theater's progress.
