Tweeter of the Week: @Washington Bus
From now until I forget to do it, I'm going to highlight my favorite Seattle Tweeter. Think of it like #FollowFriday, but less about getting followers for myself, and more about exposing Twitter accounts that are notable, humorous or informative--and always under 140 characters.
If you didn't make it to Candidate Survivor last night, we can understand that you're sick of hearing about it. So let's talk about the folks who put it on, and their excellent use of social media to mobilize the young folks. Today, we're highlighting @WashingtonBus.
In a time when everyone and their mom is being called a 'slacktivist', it's a good reminder that there are still plenty of people in the world who care about democracy and politics--and care about it deeply. The Washington Bus, a progressive, young-driven organization geared at getting folks under 30 actively engaged in politics. They go to Olympia, the pass out information, and they make sure that even the slackiest of kids are well-read enough to be able to make educated decisions when their ballots show up. And they do it all with a touch of humor, a lot of friendly smiles, and a little bit of cuteness.
All the while, they're keeping their followers informed on where they'll be, what they're working on, and what they need help with. Following the Bus is a really excellent way for folks to find out where they can get registered, or get some literature on candidates, events, measures, laws, bills--all of the stuff that you may be too lazy to look up on your own, or just don't know where to go to find it.
Unlike the canvassers downtown that make you want to hide under a parka, even on the rare sunny days, the Bus's people aren't out trying to get your money or shake your hand with their dirty little paws. They just want you to be informed and educated on the things that you'll probably complain about later, but did nothing about when you could have. And if you're already politically motivated, the Bus's Twitter feed is also a link to how else you can get involved.
Congrats, @WashingtonBus, for your use of young-people tools to reach actual young people.
