Food Frenzy: Forage, Brews, Tako Truk Redux and Juice Salon

Full disclosure: we are downright giddy about this week's food frenzy, and are planning to put on our eating and drinking pants! Won't you join us?

Want to know more about being the direct source to your food? Head straight to Wine World tonight and learn from the man, Hank Shaw, who literally grows and kills everything he eats. This weekend also brings two great events involving beer and gastropubs of sorts. One is a pilot (read: test kitchen), and the other raises money for a charity we all should support. And to cap off your weekend, our favorite Tako returns with more music and whim for Sunday dinner. Need a little more education in your wine drinking skills? Head straight to Spring Hill for Juice Salon with Trust Cellars.

In the wise words of Voltaire: "Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity." So go eat and drink.

Hunter, Gather & Cook with Hank Shaw at Wine World:

The edible bounty via foraging, gathering, hunting, fishing and what-not is quintessential to the Northwest. We thrive on the foods we've collected from the natural environment. Join Slow Food Seattle at Wine World for what is sure to be a fascinating conversation about wild foods with Hank Shaw, author of Hunt, Gather, Cook: Finding the Forgotten Feast. Nosh on treats prepared by Robin Leventhall inspired by the book such as duck confit, cured king salmon, sour cherry compote from her free and other locally sourced ingredients. Local vinters such as Elsom, McCrea, Hestia and Cedergreen Cellers will be pouring tastes of their wines.

July 28, 6-8 p.m. // Wine World (400 NE 45th St) // $15 per person (talk, appetizers & wine tasting). Tickets available via Brown Paper Tickets. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, which you can get signed by Shaw at the event.

GastroPod Preview at Epic Ales:

Seattlest first caught wind of the plans for expansion at Sodo's Epic Ales Brewery when we stopped by to sip a few of their brews in the very small tasting room. Eater of course followed up with more details. This weekend brings the second installment of the GastroPod preview with seafood ceviche & plantain chips and smoked pork tamales plus appropriately paired beers. The event is cash only so bring plenty to eat and buy a few bottles of beer to take home. We are very excited about the collaboration between Tilikum Place Cafe chef Travis Kukull and exuberant Epic Ales owner Cody Morris who not only is expanding the tasting room but also a larger brewing area for increased production.

July 30, 12 p.m.-6 p.m. // Epic Ales (The Upstairs- 3201 1st Ave S) // $7-one menu item and beer or $12 for both menu items and beers. Cash Only. RSVP on Facebook.

Drink, Eat & Raise $$$ for Food Lifeline at Brave Horse Tavern:

Brave Horse Tavern is hosting a fundraiser complete with bbq, beer, and live music in their courtyard to benefit Food Lifeline. Last year, Food Lifeline served approximately 24 million meals to more than 686,00 people in Western Washington via a network of food banks, meal programs and shelters. Your $10 includes a brat or burger and a side of chips plus a free pretzel coupon. They'll be serving $2 beers from a few of their favorite breweries.

July 30, 2-6 p.m. // Brave Horse Tavern Courtyard (310 Terry Ave N) // $10 for meal, $2 for beer // Purchase tickets here.

Tako Truk and American Standard Time Version:

This week's installment of Tako Truk brings KEXP host Greg Vandy (The Roadhouse and American Standard Time) together. Vancdy will be spinning a mix of soul-honky tonk blues-esque music and Cormac/Zoi will be cooking up the tako tacos (coco-piggy, beef cheek, salmon and who knows what else). Drinks will be $3 cans of Modelo and the $6 green drink with a splash or two of tequila. Hang out on the patio with your friends. We loved the rendition last week especially with the sunshine and the summer vibe.

July 31, 4-8 p.m. // Across from Madison Park Conservatory aka patio near the beach (1927 43rd Ave E) // Facebook Event

Juice Salon at Spring Hill: Trust Cellars

We are still mourning the loss of fried chicken dinners at Spring Hill. However, we are still pretty excited about the newest installment at Spring Hill, Juice Salon. The concept is a monthly wine and food series to help introduce us to the different styles and varietals of wine along with food prepared to match. The series kicks off with your one of your food editor's favorite Washington wineries, Trust Cellars. Winemaker Steven Brooks will be on hand pouring samples of his 2010 Riesling, 2010 Cab Franc Rose (we just polished off a bottle of this last week- yum!), 2007 Cab Sauv-Col Valley and 2008 Syrah- Walla Walla Valley. Q&A session to follow.

August 2, 5:45-7 p.m. // Spring Hill West Seattle (4437 California Avenue Southwest)//$40 per person (tax/gratuity additional) // Reserve your spot by calling (206)-935-1075
