This Week in Lit: Bad Ass Bicyclists, Demon Fish and Fantagraphics
Amy Snyder at Elliott Bay Book Co.:
If you’re into feeling even worse about yourself after a summer-y weekend of too many BBQs, beers and smokes—just swing by Elliott Bay Book Co. where triathlete and bicycle marathon veteran Amy Snyder will be reading from her book, Hell on Two Wheels. She’s telling the story of those wild folks who travel over 3,000 miles across the country on a bicycle. Oh, and they do it in less than twelve days. Needless to say, Snyder encountered some crazy stories and circumstances as she followed the participants in the 2009 Race Across America—she infiltrated their lives before, during, and after the competitions
and came up with some intriguing stuff.

Juliet Eilperin at Lake Forest Park Third Place Books:
And now, a lovely combination of my two favorite things in life
food and literature! Lake Forest Park Third Place Books is hosting a luncheon with Juliet Eilperin, author of Demon Fish: Travels Through the Hidden World of Sharks. Apparently talk of sharks encourages insane consumption of food—so when you purchase the book, you’re invited for lunch with the author. Eilperin is going to chat about the way cultures around the world interact with this predator, and why the shark still holds us all in awe
and fear.
Monday, 2 p.m. // Lake Forest Park Third Place Books // $26.95 includes signed book and luncheon
Charles Stross at University Book Store:
Science fiction! Charles Stross! The man behind some pretty intense science fiction—The Atrocity Archives and Singularity Sky to name a couple—is here to woo Seattleites with his British accent and fascinating mind. A three-time Hugo Award winner, the chance to see Stross reading is something rare and exciting.
Tuesday, 7 p.m. // University Book Store // Free
Jason Felch at Elliott Bay Book Co.:
See, art history can be fun, flashy and dangerous! At least that’s what Los Angeles Times investigative journalists Jason Felch and Ralph Frammolino have discovered from their research of the Getty Museum, and their dealings with looted art. The duo have a new book entitled, Chasing Aphrodite: The Hunt for Looted Antiquities at the World’s Richest Museum—and the amount of greed, deception and craziness in the art world with take your breath away.
Thursday, 7 p.m. // Elliott Bay Book Co. // Free
Anders Nilsen at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery:
Ok, I’m not going to lie. His website kind of freaked me out, what with the “author picture” of Nilsen with a bloody face and a fairly demonic gleam in his eye. But, my attention was grabbed, and his art is absolutely breath taking, fascinating and uncomfortable. Nilsen will be signing at Fantagraphics for Big Questions—his latest thing. Don’t miss it, enough said.
Saturday, 6 p.m. // Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery // Free
Stacey Levine with Rebecca Gordon, Martin Nakell and David Schmader at Elliott Bay Book Co.:
It’s an evening of some of our favorite writers celebrating the third edition (in two years) of Stacey Levine’s The Girl with Brown Fur: Tales & Stories. It’s also an evening celebrating the literary press who made it possible—Starcherone Books. Rebecca Gordon, Martin Nakell and David Schmader will also be around for reading
and entertainment. Happy Sunday!
