Can't Miss It: Thursday

danny_barnes.jpg TWANGx2: Banjo fans have two good options for live shows today - and the enterprising might find a way to attend both. First is a free performance by virtuoso Danny Barnes at Seattle City Hall at noon. Barnes eschews good ol’ bluegrass, instead employing electronic loops and a non-traditional, fusion approach. That isn’t too say Barnes can’t tell a story. He’s known as much for is lyrical abilities as his musical innovation. Additionally, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers bring their bluegrass stylings to Snoqualmie Casino at 6:30 tonight. Banjo 4-ever.

Noon // Seattle City Hall Plaza 600 4th Ave // FREE

WHODUNIT: Greenwood’s Taproot Theatre (which nearly went the way of the dear dinosaurs in 2009 due to an arson attack but soon bounced back as good as new) is now in the midst of its 35th Anniversary season. Its fourth play of the 2011 season is Something’s Afoot, a musical murder/mystery spoof. With booby traps, plenty of parody and a cast of familiar mystery genre characters, the play promises to be equally engaging and entertaining.

7:30 p.m. // Taproot Theatre 204 N 85th Street // $20-$35

DANCE DAYS: Local contemporary ballet company ARC presents the annual Summer Dance at the Center. Its 13th year promises a variety of performances featuring world premiers by Alex Ketley and Penny Hutchinson. Also in the lineup are ARC Artistic Director Marie Chong's No Regrets, Betsy Cooper's (UW Dance Program Director) The Space Between, Kirk Midtskog's Between Earth & Sky, and Song of the Siren by Jason Ohlberg (Hubbard Street Dance Chicago). Tonight is the first of this three-day event.

8:00 p.m. // Bagley Wright/Leo Kreielsheimer Theatre, 155 Mercer Street // $18-$30
