A Not So Still Life Screens at SIFF Cinema
In the words of local artist Ginny Ruffner, “art is the most truly human thing you can do.” And this weekend you have the chance to be the most human you can be by catching a screening of A Not So Still Life, a documentary about Ruffner’s world-renowned art, recovery from a near-fatal car accident and philosophy. The film premiered at the 2010 Seattle International Film Festival, won the audience award for Best Documentary and will play at SIFF Cinema.
Director Karen Stanton’s documentary explores Ruffner’s inspiring journey, beginning in South Carolina, moving through her tragic accident and miraculous recovery and revealing her emergence as one of the most creative and best loved American artists. Her imaginative creations, which range from pop-up books to enormous installation pieces to public works, demonstrate her endless capacity to explore, experiment and evolve.
The film’s screening coincides with the official unveiling of Ruffner’s 27-foot kinetic sculpture The Urban Garden, which is often mentioned in the film. The piece was commissioned by the Sheraton Seattle Hotel and will be part of the Sheraton Seattle Garden Walk, a project dedicated to bring green spaces to the downtown area.
A Not So Still Life will screen at SIFF Cinema from July 22 to 28. Ginny Ruffner and director Karen Stanton will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A on Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23 at the 8:00pm screenings.
