The Seafair Pirate's Booty Milk Carton Race = Seafair Week Is Almost Here

seafair_milk_carton.jpg The Pirate's Booty Seafair Milk Carton Race, traditionally one of the first event that lets us know that the Seafair parade is getting ever closer, is scheduled to take place today on Green Lake. The annual family-friendly competition is usually well attended, with entries coming in not just from families, but also from various groups, organizations and businesses throughout Seattle. This year, the race is offering over $10,000 in prizes.

The rules are pretty simple:

  • All participants must wear a life jacket
  • Boats must stay inside a designated course
  • Boats must use a minimum of 50 half-gallon cartons or the equivalent (100 half-gallon milk cartons, if the contestant falls under the commercial category)
  • Fixed oars, engines and motors are not allowed. The boats can only use the wind or human power to get across.

Though the forecast at the time of this writing is calling for rain during the morning hours, if it's anywhere close to dry when the time comes, it's almost a sure thing that the race would still take place. Considering the amount of ingenuity usually on display at this event, it's worth risking the chance of getting a little wet in order to see what people have come up with.
