We love our West Seattle neighbors, and thought they deserved more attention. Every Friday at 3 p.m., we'll post the week's happenings in Seattle's island town.

Most links are via West Seattle Blog, perhaps the best of the neighborhood blogs.

In Arts & Events:

  • Happy Hi-Yu week! The Junior Court will be crowned today as part of Hiawatha Fun Fest at Hiawatha Community Center. Tomorrow, check out the community breakfast, plus various events throughout the next week. As a born-and-raised West Seattlite originally, I can tell you that the Hi-Yu parade is seriously old-fashioned, family fun, like some snapshot of 1950s suburbia without all the bad parts. It's a great peek at old West Seattle -- it hasn't changed much in 70 years of existence.

  • Speaking of long-standing Seattle festival traditions, the Seafair Pirates landed on Alki Beach on Saturday.

  • Young actors ages 15-21 are in a production of Rocky Horror Picture Show for ArtsWest's apprenticeship program. It opened Wednesday.

  • The West Seattle Artwalk was last night, and WSB has photos.

  • The West Seattle Easy Street (as far as I am concerned, the only Easy Street) gave away a bunch of free records on Tuesday. Sorry if you missed out. Erin Thompson over at the Weekly got a really impressive haul.

In News:

  • A police standoff ended peacefully this morning with the suspect turning himself in at the Southwest Precinct. Police surrounded the suspect's house on Delridge Way after he allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun in Camp Long.

  • Tonight at 7 p.m., Brian Allen, Chas Redmond and Jeff Upthegrove (not sure if there's any relation to Dave) will host an anti-tunnel house party.

  • Two people of interest were identified in the death of Jeremy Peck. Eyewitnesses apparently saw two men dumping "something heavy" off the "low bridge" (the bridge below the West Seattle Bridge), perhaps with body parts visible.

  • A "very big" coyote has been spotted. Hide yo cats, hide yo dogs.

  • The Beer Junction has to move after being open just one year, because one corner of the Junction is apparently getting torn down.

In The Community:

  • Signs around utility poles announce an effort to resurrect the Redline, the long-standing sports bar that until recently occupied the wooden shoebox of a building next to the KFC on 35th and Avalon (now The Bridge.)

  • The High Point P-Patch's farmstand is now open, and will soon accept food stamps!

  • The owner of the Village Green Perennial Nursery, who one WSB commenter called the "George Bailey of West Seattle," has a little sleuthing done by the Seattle Times.

  • Keep an eye out for a German Shepherd named Cooper, who ran off yesterday after a traffic accident. Cooper was found!

  • A lot of questionable solicitors are making their rounds.

  • West Seattle Little League is going to state!
