Today is 7/11: Guess Who's Giving Away Free Stuff?
We know it's a little early in the morning to start thinking about frozen treats, but we wanted to make sure you were got in while the getting is good. Because today, your neighborhood 7-Eleven is going to be overrun with kids on summer break, anxious soccer moms and people who just really like free stuff. Yup, it's Free Slurpee Day at the world's largest operator of convenience stores.
Slurpees, the delectable frozen beverage that's been keeping young people entertained (and in minor amounts of innocuous pain) since the 60s, are more of a cultural icon than a dietary staple. Burned in the brains of adults and kids alike, it doesn't matter how long it's been since the last time you made a graveyard, you can still remember the flavor of the icy, sugary drink.
7-Eleven, originally named for the store's hours of operation, from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., is one of few businesses fortunate enough to have a day of the year that is the same as their name, making it the perfect opportunity for a promotion. And so, each year, they reap the benefits of impulse buying, but luring customers in with a free 7.11 ounce (teehee) Slurpees, while supplies last.
Note: supplies don't last long on Free Slurpee Day. So scoot down to your nearest Shrine of Snack Food, beat your way past the stoners, and get yourself something sweet. But go slowly. The only thing more memorable than the flavor is the feeling of getting punched behind the eyeballs by a brain-freeze.
**For those of you who did not have a childhood, a graveyard is when you put every flavor of Slurpee available into one single cup. Five flavors, one cup.
