Tweeter of the Week: @SEACityLight

From now until I forget to do it, I'm going to highlight my favorite Seattle Tweeter. Think of it like #FollowFriday, but less about getting followers for myself, and more about exposing Twitter accounts that are notable, humorous or informative--and always under 140 characters.

Seattle, it's time to get pragmatic with your Twitter followers.

When looking for a great new Tweeter to follow, it's easy to fall into the trap of humorous one-liners and cute photos of LOLCats. And while plenty of those in your feed can help perk you up on the bus or give you a much-needed midday distraction, it's important to remember that Twitter is also a valuable civic lifeline that can connect with your government offices and municipal services. Which is why today's must-follow Twitter account is for your own good. Like vegetables. And taking days off from drinking.

@SEACityLight offers the sort of important messages that can come in very handy. Featuring recommendations for events and public forums, informative posts and tips about matters related to energy usage and consumption and to-the-minute updates of service outages and repairs, the official Twitter account of City Light keeps you in the know about the folks who keep the lights on. During the snowy season, this is a very helpful account to have in your feed.

City Light's Twitter feed also provides the kind of information that can be hard to find, like where to recycle a refrigerator, or what they're up to in your neighborhood. Has the utility truck been parked in front of your apartment complex all day? Tweet at them and ask why, and you'll probably get a fairly prompt response.

@SEACityLight, you're the reason we can stay online all day. Thanks for making that time informative.
