Can't Miss It: Thursday
TWISTERS: The peanut gallery (in this case a Wing-It Productions improv crew) gets its chance to be heard when Twisted Flicks turns down the sound on the 1990 blockbuster hit Captain America (Oscar for Best Movie Ever, probably Best Screenplay, Best Acting in General, Best 20% Rotten Tomatoes Score) and offers its own dialog and sound design. The audience can also participate by providing suggestions.
8:00 p.m. // Wing-It Productions // $10-$14
SUPER HERO: Prodigious jazz pianist Hiromi can't sit still. It'd seem like a sacrilege if she did. At 26, she's an vibrant jazz master, able to go almost anywhere composers have gone before her (city streets, basement clubs, seaside highways, space), packaging up the past with prog and a touch of classical and then heading somewhere altogether new. Hiromi's newest album, Voice, was released June 7th, and her trio is spending three days in Seattle starting tonight.
7:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m. // Dimitrou’s Jazz Alley // $26.50
SNAKES THESE DAYS: Pacific Play Company's inaugural production is the world premiere of Snakes and Ladders by Daniel Tarker. It's the story of a recently divorced couple stuck in a house they can't unload, who find out how far they're willing to stoop to make a dime in an all but dead market. A period piece about the 21st century depression, Snakes and Ladders promises to be darkly funny, fast paced, and bawdy.
8:00 p.m. // DownStage Theatre 4029 Stone Way N. // $10-$16
ARE YOU EXPERIMENTAL? Mark McGuire is a versatile individual. Initially known for his contributions to Cleveland ambient trio Emeralds, Mcguire embarked on a solo career last year that traded in the dense sonic explorations of his former group for a more focused, guitar-driven palette. In recordings, McGuire borrows from the best elements of minimalism, prog rock and ambient tones, building loop-driven pieces that gently sway and bloom into expansive soundscapes. Live, you can expect much of the same - McGuire's pieces are by nature slow burners, but they're also inevitably worth the wait. You can catch McGuire tonight, along with fellow sonic sailors Rene Hell, Brother Raven, and Eye Myths, at Seattle's finest underground experimental music venue, The Josephine.
