Washington State GOP Pressures Inslee Over Decade-Old Weiner Donation

The biggest non-scandal of the month has hit home again. On Thursday, the day US Representative Anthony Weiner resigned over the controversy surrounding a scandalous picture on his Twitter, the Washington State GOP re-tweeted a public records enthusiast who came up with this underwhelming nugget:

Anthony Weiner (person, Democrat) gave $1,000 to local congressman Jay Inslee. Eleven years ago, October 12, 2000 (my fourteenth birthday!), Anthony Weiner had the foresight to know there would be rumors that Jay Inslee might run for Washington State Governor in 2011.

The party subsequently sent out a press release, which Seattlest did not receive -- but the lovely folks at the Everett Herald rehashed it for your reading pleasure:

"Congressman Inslee needs to send back Weiner's tainted money. He needs to send the message that what Weiner did was inappropriate," said Peter Graves, executive director of the state party...

"There's obviously a relationship there. Not everybody gets a donation from him," said Josh Amato, the Republican Party's communications director, in explaining why the public appeal was made.

Not everybody gets a donation from him -- mean, I'm sure Rick Santorum has not -- but the record in question shows that he was no stranger to political contributions.

Inslee, rolling with the punches, did not give the money back. He took that misguided Republican rage and gave the dollar amount to Planned Parenthood. Can we all shut up about Weinergate now? Because I barfed all over the keyboard just typing out "Weinergate."
