Letter from The Editor: This Sunday, Support Your Sluts

Note from the Editor:
Initially, we were going to give absolutely no press to the members or actions of the Westboro Baptist Church. However, when it was brought to our attention that they would be in Seattle to maliciously protest an empowering parade of and for rape survivors, as well the Pride Picnic, we had to at least make mention. However, it is a conscious decision to not offer any links to any of the church's many hateful websites. We will also, from here on out, be referring to this organization as "That Church from Kansas."

Do you have plans on Sunday? No? Good. Because your support is needed at SlutWalk.

Founded after the women of Toronto were advised by police to minimize their risk of sexual violence being perpetuated against them by chosing to "avoid dressing like sluts," SlutWalk is an inclusive march designed to help women feel safe and supported, as well as to bring attention to the truly backwards nature of victim-blaming. Many of the walkers are victims of rape, sexual assault and other acts of violence and aggression, but plenty of participants are allies who, while they've never been victims, want to show solidarity. So far, there have been dozens of SlutWalks in across Canada and the US; there has been a SlutWalk, somewhere in North America, every weekend since the initial walk in Toronto. This weekend, SlutWalk is coming to Seattle. Unfortunately, it won't just be allies at the march.

This morning, the PI reported that That Church from Kansas will be joining the marchers as they wind their way from Capitol Hill to Westlake Center. And we urge you to, rather than spit vile words and insults back at them, invite them to join.

The members of That Church from Kansas are truly, truly irrational people. They are seething with rage. They are less of a religious organization, and more of a hate group. They cannot be reasoned with, and they cannot be convinced away from their beliefs.

Thus, rather than feed hatred with more hatred, we encourage readers to come to SlutWalk. Bring your friends. Wear whatever you like. And politely either ignore the members of the church, or invite them to join. Instead of fueling their anger and allowing them to ever feel important or victorious, do what you mother told you to--kill them with kindness. And, of course, overwhelm them with how much support Seattle can bring to its self-proclaimed sluts.

As an added bonus, That Church from Kansas has also RSVPed to the Pride Picnic, on that same day. Much like any uninvited guest, the presence of That Church has the uncanny ability to immediately put a damper on otherwise enjoyable events. But don't let them.

Don't let these sad, misguided and hateful people ruin your fun this weekend. Make out with your partner in front of them. Smile and wave. Give them a sticker or a valentine. But please, don't stoke the flames. Haters gonna hate, but you don't have to.

  • Those People from That Church in Kansas should stay home and mind their own business. We don't come to their towns, hold rallies, parades, calling names regarding their way of life. Don't these folk have anything better to do?
