Here's to Beer! Summer Brews

Having a few friends over for ribs...
Lately a strange phenomenon has been taking place, in which a big, bright ball of light has begun to peek through the clouds. I believe they used to call it, the SUN, and the time of year when it comes out was called “Summer”. Ok, jokes aside, summer is coming soon, though it hardly seems like it given the cool, overcast days that have been prevailing this spring. In the spirit of looking forward to a positive future, I wanted to take a look at some of the summer seasonals that are being introduced for your cook out and beach going enjoyment.

There are two lagers in this group. Typically, the word “lager” makes people think of light macro lagers that come in cans and help you score chicks at the ball game while talking frogs crack jokes. (It makes no sense to me either, but, judging by the commercials, it’s what big beer would have us all believe). Therefore, it’s refreshing to see some quality lagers being made by craft brewers.

First I tried Summerfest Lager by Sierra Nevada. It’s a Pilsener style lager that has a light malt profile and a pleasant note of spicy, floral hops. It’s clean, crisp and refreshing. In other words, everything you could want out of a summer beer.

Next up is Ziggy Zoggy Summer Lager from local favorites Silver City Brewery. It has a gentle elegance and refined hop profile that would rival some of the finest German lagers. If an “elevated” lager is what you seek then look no further. Excellent, and highly recommended.

But, lest you think it’s all about the lagers, let’s give some ale a shout out. Deschutes Brewing has a summer seasonal called Twilight. Deschutes is well known for their large roster of outstanding products, and Twilight is no exception. It has a light citrusy sweetness and just enough bitterness to balance, courtesy of Amarillo hops.

Speaking of Amarillo hops, this popular hops variety also makes an appearance in Summer Solstice by Fremont Brewing. This pale ale also presents with some citrus notes, as well as profound hops flavor and aroma that has a fresh cedar quality. Down a few of these for some liquid courage before you get naked in the Solstice parade.

Now, let us all fire up our barbeques, and make offerings to the weather gods in the form of ribs, steaks, burgers, dogs, and of course, beer. Let the summer festivities begin!
