Weekend Sports Roundup
Division Race: Things got off to a slow start Sunday in Detroit, but Miguel Olivo made sure the scoreboard didn't have a dull day. He knocked one out of the park in the 5th and added a two-run homer in the 8th inning. Justin Smoak and Brendan Ryan were also big contributors in the 7-3 win. The victory was a much needed salvo after the 8-1 thumping the Mariners received on Saturday, and it keeps the Ms only 1 1/2 games back in the division.
Missing Lynx: The Seattle Storm, who won the last 18 regular season games they played at the Key Arena, could not keep the streak alive when the Minnesota Lynx rolled into town on Thursday. The Storm fell 81-74 in spite of Sue Bird's 24 points and Swin Cash's 18.
Border Battle: When it comes to facing off against Pacific Northwest rivals this season, the Sounders keep winding up in a draw. Saturday, the Vancouver Whitecaps were in town, and it looked like it might be a win for the Sounders. But, with Seattle up 2-1 with about 5 minutes left in the match, Vancouver just wasn't ready to admit defeat. Whitecap forward Eric Hassli knocked in his second goal of the game in the 85th minute, and what an impressive goal it was. As Kasey Keller said: "Sometimes you just have to shake someone's hand and just say that's a hell of a goal."
