Will you do me the honor of making music with me?

Couples-based bands have a long history in music, including legendary acts like Fleetwood Mac and the Plastic Ono Band. The current soundscape, of course, is also replete with examples of spouses collaborating on music—Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo), and Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally (Beach House), to name only a few. While there are pitfalls to examining a band exclusively through the prism of a relationship, most artists concede there is some degree of interplay between these separate dynamics.

Performers/partners Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin, who make up Wildbirds and Peacedrums bring their stage chemistry to the Triple Door tonight. Hailing from Sweden, Wallentin and Werliin met in the music academy at the University of Gothenburg. Since leaving the school, the couple has sought to venture beyond the boundaries of traditional musical forms. Wallentin effects various vocal stylings that allow her to pull off roles that range from a cappella performer to sultry chanteuse. Andreas Werliin employs unorthodox percussive elements to create unique arrangements sympatico within jazz, blues, pop and folk traditions.

During live shows, Wildbirds and Peacedrums have a sound that is as organic as it is eclectic, a fact that seems at least partly attributable to Wallentin's and Werliin’s couple status: “We’ve always found it completely natural to just play with just the two of us,” Wallentin says of performing.
