Watch Out, Shady Employers: Wage Theft Law Officially in Effect

Do-gooder and crime-hater City Councilman Tim Burgess blogged a warning to wage-pilfering employers today: what you're doing is illegal, and we're going to get you.

At a media event earlier today, alongside John "Cookieduster" Diaz, Attorney Pete Holmes, members of Casa Latina and the Mayor, Burgess announced that the City would be using the "full force of [its] police and prosecution resources...against unscrupulous employers who intentionally withhold wages" from employees. This includes shorting employees for labor completed, withholding pay checks and taking tips. According to Burgess, "the employees taken advantage of are usually poor, often don't speak much English, and sometimes are immigrants or refugees who are trying to reestablish themselves and their families."

The new law, which was adopted last month, works to strengthen existing laws, which were weak and difficult to prosecute.
