Weekend Sports Roundup: Three Wins and a Draw
Hot Bats: Between the 7-0 thrashing the Tampa Bay Rays took Friday and yesterday's come-from-behind 9-6 win, the Mariners seem to have this whole explosive offense thing down. And, it's not just one or two players putting runs on the board. Miguel Olivo had a clutch three-run homer last night, Adam Kennedy and Justin Smoak were both big contributors on Friday, Brendan Ryan is hitting well, and even Ichiro added a key triple over the weekend. Standing just 1 1/2 games out of first in the division, the Ms are showing no signs of slowing down.
Next Up: A three-game series against the Chicago White Sox kicks off tonight.
Summer Storm: The Seattle Storm kicked off their 2011 season over the weekend in much the same way they ended last year's -- with a win. The reigning champs defeated the Phoenix Mercury 78-71 at the Key Arena on Saturday, and, even though star Lauren Jackson wasn't able to contribute as much as she usually does, perennial power player Sue Bird and Camille Little (with a team leading 18 points) more than picked up the slack.
Next Up: Thursday's home game against the Minnesota Lynx.
Shutout: Add another shutout to Kasey Keller's season stats, but, while you're at it, add one to Chicago goalie Sean Johnson's as well. Both the Sounders and the Fire were unable to knock one in during Saturday's matchup, but the 0-0 draw is enough to put the Sounders in third place in the Western Conference standings.
Next Up: The Vancouver Whitecaps come to town Saturday.
