Can't Miss It: Memorial Day
FEELING FOLKSY: Still kicking yourself because you didn't make it to Sasquatch! this year? Don't stress--there's still an at-home music festival, right in the Space Needle's back yard. Folklife is 40 years old, it offers some truly incredible people watching and, bonus, it's free! Navigate your way through the buskers and bums to eat awesome local grub, jam to crunchy string bands, watch dancers and children and church groups perform and generally support your community.
Northwest Folklife // Today 11:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. // Seattle Center // FREE (Donations Accepted) // Check out the schedule here
TURN THE PAGE: Lots of things may be closed for the holiday, but SIFF is still going strong. Today, we recommend the last showing of "Page One: Inside the New York Times," an eye-opening documentary about the publishing giant's struggle in the digital world. A vibrant look at newsroom culture, the lifestyle of a reporter and the tension between scoops and sensationalist, an afternoon matinée of "Page One" is a perfect pick for your spare day off. Sure, it's playing at the Everett Events Center, but if you haven't already seen it, it's totally worth it.
"Page One: Inside the New York Times" // 3:30 p.m. // Everett Events Center // $9 - $11 // Buy tickets online here
SPANISH FLY: The best way to cap off a long, rainy day of not working? Drifting away on a cloud of sweet piano pop at Chop Suey, of course. Tonight, the three adorbs boys of Barcelona will heartbreakingly harmonize. Largely passed over on the Seattle scene for being a little too "scene," this group has recently received an uptick in attention; their tune "Please Don't Go" was featured in a trailer for that new circus movie with the kid from "Twilight" in it. Bring your besties and a little packet of Kleenex--you're going to want someone to hug as the melodies swell.
Barcelona, with Jenny O. and Holcombe Walker // 7:00 p.m. // Chop Suey // $15 - $18
