In Case You Missed It: Nickelsville Moved Friday Afternoon

Citing privacy and space concerns, not being able to carry forth their mission and an extreme dislike of Seattle City Councilmember Richard Conlin as motivators (read all their reasons on their website), Nickelsville moved from Old Firehouse #39 in Lake City to its original location at 7116 W Marginal Way just out of West Seattle on Friday, two days before their announced move date. They'd been invited by the City to stay at the location for a couple of extra months, but the space just isn't what they're looking for.

"Sleeping in the Bay Station for a Fire Truck, with 20 other people, doesn't afford anyone privacy and everyone deserves that - especially families and couples," said media liason Revel Smith in a press release, adding that "Nickelsville has pets, couples and kids. They all need privacy and simple sturdy sleeping structures. None of these are possible long term at Firestation #39." They hoped that on the 15th the Mayor would turn over the space to local outreach group SHARE/WHEEL, so they could begin operating it as a shelter upon Nickelsville vacating.

As of Friday, the City hadn't had a chance to connect with Nickelsville about the move--Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith told KOMO that they'd catch up with staff early this week.
