Spam. Everyone has an opinion about it. And no, we aren't talking about the annoying stuff that graces your email inbox and sends messages on Facebook inviting all of your friends to take a survey. The topic of discourse today is the meat from a can. Some of us dread it. Hawaiians on the other hand live for the pinkish meat from a can. Are you an enthusiast of the spiced ham? Well perhaps you should plan your next vacation to Austin, MN to pay homage at the SPAM museum. OK, we might be getting a little overzealous here.
Regardless, today we celebrate SPAM's anniversary or maybe spamiversary? SPAM was created in 1937 by Jay Hormel as a way to preserve pork shoulder. Years later, thousands of Americans find ways to eat SPAM; to be exact, almost 8 billion cans have been sold since 1937. Our favorite place to savor SPAM in Seattle, is at the Marination Mobile. They'll be celebrating the holiday at both the truck and station today with a few extra-SPAMtastic specials.
Marination plans to give away a limited number of SPAM cans along with special edition Marination recipes. Spammy Joes to commemorate the holiday along with plenty of SPAM slides and SPAM musabi. A limited amount of SPAM schwag for friends of the truck too.
Follow Marination Mobile on Twitter (@curb_cuisine) for exact location details and special updates. Marination parks big blue on Wednesdays in Fremont. Check out their newest brick and mortar, Marination Station in Capitol Hill off Broadway.
Happy SPAMiversary! What's your favorite way to eat your SPAM? And for your viewing pleasure and in honor of yesterday's Monty Python Status Update Day, we bring you more SPAM.
