Seattle Fashion Incubator Moves Into Belltown
There's been a lot of chatter about what Seattle's next "big" neighborhood will be. Seattle Magazine is cheering for underdogs like White Center and West Seattle, while foodies are lauding South Lake Union (thanks, T-Doug) as the next hot spot. And yet, no one seems to be in Belltown's corner--except, it seems, Seattle's burgeoning fashion community.
Aside from a few reputable sources (and some shady "off-the-truck" retailing that SPD put a stop to earlier in the year), Belltown's reputation has less to do with style, and more to do with sloppy behavior and the occasional shots fired. But what makes for a better garment district that a slightly-gritty outward appearance, proximity to the downtown core and a few good folks to step it up and take it over? Answer: nothing. Which is why we're congratulating the Seattle Fashion Incubator for choosing the Little Neighborhood that Probably Could as its new home.
The Incubator, which provides emerging designers an opportunity to grow their brand in an affordable, encouraging space. Designers who work with SFI will be able to ask for advice, get help with marketing, and of course, design and sew garments.
According to the press release, "the procurement of this space was made possible by the addition of Marta Kappl to the SFI team as Program Director," a noted designer and dressmaker.
SFI's new space, located at 113 Virginia Street, will offer "accessible and affordable design space, access to capital, specialty goods & equipment, professional mentorship and industry specific presentation space," and will host up to six full-time designers-in-residence. The space will also feature a boutique area where designers can showcase and sell their garments.
We're excited to hear about more brave souls moving into Belltown. With more engaging spaces like this, Seattle could actually achieve the vibrant urban core it's been hoping for since the World's Fair.
