A Grain of Beer News: Naked City is Expanding
Seattle Beer Week nearly upon us. From May 19th-29th, we'll be covering the tastings, cask nights, openings and evens as much as we can-- and as much as our livers will allow us. Here's a delicious schooner of beer news from one of our favorite watering holes. Stay tuned for more updates from around the city.
Here are a few things you need to know:
1.) Greenwood is not Green Lake. Greenwood is North of the Zoo, West of the Lake, East of Golden Gardens, and Northeast of Ballard.
2.) Greenwood has had some blows in the last few years, and a couple of fine establishments have gone by the wayside. But....
3.) Greenwood is still kickin'. As evidenced by the news we received last week that one of the greatest breweries in the city, which is located in the heart of Greenwood, is expanding--just in time for Beer Week.
For nearly three years, Naked City Brewery & Taphouse has served tasty Northwest meals and more beer than you can shake a hop at. With at least five in-house brews on tap (plus about 20 others from mostly-local breweries), Naked City hosts cask nights and brewers' meet-and-greets, and is a frequent guest at area tastings.
And for most of those three years (aside from a few short-term rentals), the space adjacent to theirs has been empty. But last week, a Naked City banner appeared in the window. Curious neighbor that I am, I stopped in to speak with co-owner Donald Averill, who assured me that, yes, they are expanding. On Friday, the walls came down--or at least, portions of them did.
Averill let me know that, for Beer Week, the pub would be offering additional seating, but likely no table service to the additional 900ish square feet of space. Much like an indoor beer garden or German-style sitting room, the new space will allow more patrons to come and enjoy, without feeling ass-to-elbows as they crowd around the bar. Later down the line, Averill told me, the space will be able to be used for rentals, dining and additional events.
