Today in News that Isn't Surprising: Spencer's Gifts Doesn't Card for Porn
This logo doesn't spell "discretion" and "responsibility for other peoples' children" to you?
According to the story, Spencer's, a mall "gift shop," has been selling sexually explicit videos, toys and other items to minors, much to the dismay of parents, who believe that sending their kid to the mall is "safe." One parent of a 13-year-old's dramatic reaction:
"They have sex toys in there. They have nude photos. They have sex games, stimulants...And I'm just appalled that they would sell these things to minors."
Her logical conclusion?
"You know, you're basically telling these kids that it's OK to go out and have sex and you're promoting it...and that's not right."
That same parent's 13-year-old daughter, by the way, described Spencer's as "the cool hangout place."
Doing a little research for this article, I Googled Spencer's, and found this:
Actual third Google result.
With the help of this parent and her 13-year-old (who had already admitted to purchasing a "small sex aid"), Problem Solvers took a tour of several Spencer's stores, namely those in Tukwila and Puyallup. What did they find? The store that sells tasteless and sexual shit was willing to sell the tasteless and sexual shit to kids. Which is, by the way, "perfectly legal," according to the story.
Sure, Spencer's probably shouldn't carry sex toys in a place that's a "cool hangout place" for teens. But the company spokesperson did say there was a policy against selling the hardcore stuff to kids, which leads us to believe that this is less of a problem within the company and more of a staffing issue. Because a person working in what is basically a sex shop that also sells "Family Guy" boxer shorts and Spongebob baby-backpacks is perhaps not the most discerning or responsible babysitters for the kids whose parents feel that they are "safe" at the mall.
