WANDERING MELODIC FIELDS: tune-yards is Merrill Garbus, anarchist puppeter, all-women a cappella singer, and compulsive field recorder. Garbus' first album BiRd-BrAiNs was recorded over a span of two and a half years on a hand-held voice recorder, sampling her life seconds a time, weaving sounds together to make dusty and combustible rhythms, woven with ukulele. She performs tonight at the Crocodile with Buke & Gass, i.e. Brooklyners Arone Dyer on the "buke" (a self-modified six-string former baritone ukulele) and Aron Sanchez on the "gass" (a guitar-bass hybrid of his own creation). These home-made instruments are then run through multiple audio outputs into amps, mixers, distortion boxes, and pitch shifters to create a hypnotic combination of dream-filtered sounds. Together these two will take the familiar and twist it.
Friday 8:00 p.m. // The Crocodile // $12 (21+)

FLAME EATING STRING: The Carter Family Marionettes present The Burning House, an opera via marionette. Created especially for The Royal Marionette Theater at Esterhaza Palace by Franz Josef Haydn, this opera features splendid live baroque music by Margriet Tindemans. Explore grand themes on a small scale, but hurry: The Burning House will stand for a limited engagement of only two weekends at the Northwest Puppet Center before leaving nothing but ashen memories.
Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. (Through May 8th) // Northwest Puppet Center // $28.00 - $32.00

NO LEMONS: JUICE returns for another sweltering evening of dance music from around the world and right here in Seattle. From the fabulous decks of KEXP/WNYE DJs Darek Mazzone and Rhythma, JUICE is a mix of grooves from around the world, perfectly calculated to send you traveling across the floor. Proceeds benefit the UNICEF Tap Project and Keep a Child in School. This time around, JUICE welcomes special guests Lalo Bello on congas and Scott Morning on horns for a live flavor that will set your senses afire. Make a difference: move your meridians.
Saturday 10:00 p.m. // Re-Bar // $10

UNCONVENTIONAL CONVENT: Here's something we didn't know: The convent of Las Huelgas in Northern Spain housed the rebel women of nobility who sang polyphony in a time when women were forbidden to do so. Now, Anonymous 4, a medieval a capella ensemble, performs an evening of some of those taboo pieces, augmented by early-music instrumentalists Shira Kammen on vielle, and Peter Maund on percussion. As Presented by the Early Music Guild, it feels nothing but prescient.
Saturday 8:00 p.m. // Town Hall // $40/$35 senior/$25 side sections/$15 under 25
