Yuck @ Neumos Tonight

Yuck may be a relatively new buzz band on the scene, but their strong penchant for '80s and '90s vintage rock evokes a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. Although Yuck's fuzzed out, howling guitars and lethargic vocals channel established bands such as Dinosaur Jr, they're proof that old tricks still work. That's not to say the young, London-based quartet is a knockoff. Using a lo-fi indie rock sounds as a foundation, Yuck adds their own power pop melodies, giving them an overall vibe that is earnest and emerging. Once these rockers get some extensive tours under their belts and push inventiveness further, we can only surmise that their followup tunes will be even more impacting.
Yuck is based in the UK, but not all of its members are. The bassist is from Hiroshima and the drummer is from New Jersey. The other three are north Londoners, and two were even in the ill-fated band Cajun Dance Party, a band with a solid debut that quietly faded away. Although Yuck is following in the initial footsteps of Cajun Dance Party with a well-received self-titled debut, they show signs of being more successful in the long run with multi-day showcases at SXSW, followed by a North American tour. Let's hope these young rockers continue down the promising path they've already stepped foot on.
For more on Yuck, check out their blog and SoundCloud page; also peep their awesome SXSW showcase for KEXP at Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop in Austin. See them live tonight at Neumos when they open for Tame Impala, but be warned that this show is sold out!
