Check This Out Tonight: Movie Buffs, Critics and Drinkers Unite

GoodFellas.jpg Everything seems clearer in hindsight—which is the point of The 20/20 Awards this evening at Central Cinema.

Built around the premise that the Oscars don’t always get it right, creator Kris Kristensen has gathered some memorable industry professionals to glance back at that controversial year in 1991—a year when Goodfellas, a bad-ass flick, was surpassed by Dances With Wolves. A year when Kathy Bates and Glenn Close went head to head for “Best Actress”, and Patrick Swayze steamed things up in Ghost (though Whoopi’s the one that actually grabbed an Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress”). Sometimes it takes a little distance—say 20 years or so of distance—to recognize genius; and sometimes it’s just fun to hang out with film buffs and fans and commiserate about what might have been. Winners have been voted in by the syndicate members found at www.2020awards.org and will be announced by presenters—Mark Handley of NELL and Malory Graham of Reel Grrls being just a few of those scheduled. Grab your smashingly Oscar-worthy attire, some beer and popcorn…and on with the show!

Wednesday, 7 p.m. // Central Cinema // ticket $7 advance, $9 at door
