Weekend Sports Roundup
Not Quite a Master: The first major in the PGA season occurred over the weekend, with South African Charl Schwartzel claiming the 75th green jacket for his impressive win at the Masters. But, up until Sunday, when at least 10 players were in a shooting match for the title, it looked like Fred Couples (a Seattle native) could be a contender. As it was, the 51-year-old finished tied for 15th at -4.
Losing Streak: In a season that is only 9 games old, the Mariners are back to their losing ways. After dropping three games to the Rangers last week, the team's first home series over the weekend saw three more added to the "loss" column. Generally, the offense carries some of the blame: a team batting a collective .215 isn't blowing anyone away with their hitting abilities. But, careless fielding has had its moments as well - the Mariners put up an error in each of their three games this weekend. Here's hoping they can right this ship by the time they kick off their series against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight at Safeco Field.
They Shoot, They Score: The Sounders secured their first win of the MLS season with a 2-1 defeat of the Chicago Fire. O'Brian White was the star of the show, scoring the first goal and setting up Steve Zakuani for the second. Kasey Keller, as fitting of his reputation as one of the league's best goalies, was solid in the net. Next up, the Sounders fly to Philly for a weekend matchup against the Union.
