Check This Out Tonight: A Young Man’s Guide to Late Capitalism Book Launch Party
From the very first moments of Mountford’s novel, A Young Man’s Guide to Late Capitalism, the reader is swept into a world of money, deception and passion in the unfamiliar terrain of Bolivia.
Gabriel Francisco de Boya joins the notoriously voracious hedgefund, The Calloway Group, and jets off to his new (and insanely high-paying) job in La Paz with hopes of securing his future, and helpful information for his demanding boss.
It is there where Gabriel encounters his lively and complicated cast of characters—the seductive and devious journalist Fiona, the passionate press liaison Lenka, Evo—the inspirational, new leader of the people, and various other quirky folks.
Peppered with enlightening historical information (I personally had limited knowledge of Bolivia’s complex and bloody history), amusing pop culture allusions, and clever dialogue, A Young Man’s Guide engrosses until the end. And Gabriel’s transformation during his time in Bolivia remains the most interesting facet of the novel; his every decision driving him further into a world of greed, deceit and delusions of what it means to be happy.
The power of the book is that just when you’re ready to write Gabriel off as just another money-grubbing bastard, he surprises the reader with a touching and insightful thought—but then he pisses you off again.
Enjoy the company of the writer himself (the novel is loosely inspired by his own experience), and make up your own mind.
Tonight’s launch party will be popping (there will be balloons after all)—also look forward to drinks, prizes, and books for sale thanks to Elliott Bay Book Company.
Tomorrow is publication day for Mountford’s novel, making it a time to celebrate his accomplishment and our city’s local talent.
