This Week in Lit: Nothing Says Spring Like Decapitation and Punk Rock Zines...
There is just too much to choose from this week—and because I don’t want my head to explode, I’m piling on the listings for Seattle’s literary events. You lucky folks get to choose from ex-boyfriends and headless bodies, to Spring reading and boozing, to “homemade” (and pizza-filled) lives. Let the good times, vivacious speakers, and full bars roll.
Lisa Lutz and David Hayward at “The Grotto” at Rendezvous Bar:
Curiosity alone should be enough to lure you to the Rendezvous’ Grotto for a literary event—dark, swanky and booze-fueled, could we ask for more? It also helps that authors Lisa Lutz and David Hayward promise to be entertaining as they expound on their collaborative mystery book, Heads You Lose. Lutz invited longtime friend (and ex) Hayward to alternate writing chapters with her for the project
a process that grew messy, as is shown through the letters written from one author to the other. It’s bound to be stylish, distinctive, and amusing to boot.
Tuesday, 7 p.m. // “The Grotto” at Rendezvous Bar // Free, must be 21 or older
Spring Reading at Sole Repair Shop:
Let’s say that it’s spring, and even though it’s probably still dumping buckets outside Sole Repair is lightening things up with a Spring Reading event. The night will feature the literary stylings of Charity Burns, Paullette Gaudet, Ed Skoog, Urban Waite, and host (and local author) Peter Mountford. There’s a bar just bursting with booze for the celebration, and I believe I heard the words after-party.
Wednesday, 7 p.m. // Sole Repair Shop // $5, also visit brownpapertickets.com
Tesco Vee (of the Meatmen) at Elliott Bay Book Company:
Fans of the early hardcore punk rock fanzine Touch and Go will be ecstatic to learn that the DIY publication that spread the word about music from the Midwest to San Francisco to D.C. is back in book form. The entire run of the zine is captured in Touch and Go: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine ’79-83. Though the zine featured the thoughts of everyone from Henry Rollins to Keith Morris, author Tesco Vee will be the man speaking this night.
Head to El Corazon afterwards if you want to catch Tesco Vee’s band, the Meatmen, perform.
Friday, 7 p.m. // Elliott Bay Book Company // Free
Molly Wizenberg at Bellevue Regional Library:
Not only does Molly Wizenberg own a little piece of my heart because of her (and her husband’s) amazing pizza joint Delancey, but she also has a memoir, A Homemade Life, that she can be proud of. This talented writer, blogger, and pizza aficionado will be reading from her book at the Bellevue Library, and audience members are welcome to purchase themselves an autographed copy after the festivities.
Saturday, 1 p.m. // Bellevue Regional Library // Free
Recto Verso: A Small Press Expo at Richard Hugo House:
When an assortment of superstars from the independent publishing industry get together there’s bound to be an exciting ruckus, and this Saturday is no exception. Folks from Copper Canyon Press, FutureTense Books, Wave Books, Fantagraphics, Jaded Ibis Press, Dark Sky Books, and Chin Music Press (to name a few) will be gathering at the Hugo House for an afternoon of reading, chatting, and imbibing. This event is presented in partnership with Pilot Books—and if that’s not enough of an incentive, a snazzy book bag should be the clincher!
Saturday, 2-6 p.m. // Richard Hugo House //$5-15 sliding scale, includes gifts, book bag
