Can't Miss It: The Weekend
MAGMA FESTIVAL: Hollow Earth Radio's annual MAGMA Festival flows into its third weekend with shows fiery and powerful. Tonight, catch art activists Mecca Normal, Francophone Ô Paon, and multi-instrumentalist Sue Ann Harkey over at the Chapel Performance Space. After the show is over, sneak into the broom closet, keep very quiet, and you might be able to slip right into Saturday's performance with folk troubadour Michael Hurley, Maldive Jason Dodson, and the ineffable Shana Cleveland & The Sand Castles. While you're in there waiting, why not spend some time writing verses for Sunday's DJ/MC/Spoken Word open mic at Hollow Earth Studios? We bet there's lots of good rhymes for mop handle.
Friday 7:00 p.m. // The Chapel Performance Space // $10 - $20 Sliding Scale
Saturday 7:00 p.m. // The Chapel Performance Space // $10 - $20 Sliding Scale
Sunday 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. // Hollow Earth Radio // $5
SUPPORT HONK!: HONK! Fest West is a free, non-profit, and community supported music festival devoted to marching bands, drum corps, samba lines, and the like. This year will be HONK!'s fourth, and even though the Festival isn't until May, the work has already begun to raise the necessary funds to cover permits, venue rentals, food for the musicians and volunteers, travel costs, and all the other line-item details that come with putting on a music festival. Not only can you contribute to their Kickstarter, but you can attend their first fundraiser this Saturday with performances by VamoLà, Tubaluba, Bucharest Drinking Team, The Garfield High School Drumline, and Orkestar Zirkonium. Drink and dance for a good cause.
Saturday 8:00 p.m. // Underground Events Center // $10 - $20 Sliding Donation
SWEDISH SUPERS: In Swedish, the collaboration between nyckelharpa master Olov Johansson, vioalist Mikael Marin, and guitarist Roger Tallroth is known as Väsen. For over 20 years, these three have explored the territory between classical, folk, and pop, walking between the Swedish fiddle tradition and world acoustic future. Vasen will play songs from their 13+ albums, and give a talk about their careers, music, and hopefully the Swedish language before the show.
Sunday 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. // Town Hall // $20 ($17 for Town Hall members, students & seniors)
