Embrace Your Inner Math Geek with a Slice of Pi

pieequation.jpg
Since 2011 is supposedly the year of pie, the food-centric powers that be decided to adopt a holiday that before now passed us by completely: National Pi Day. Yes, the infinite number often rounded to 3.14 has its own national holiday. The term pi in mathematical terms represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter equaling 3.141592653- an infinite and constant number. The rest, really boring. It's the edible type of pie that gets our juices flowing. Serious Eats sponsors an annual Pi Day baking contest encouraging bakers to use their creativity to showcase the pi. On Monday, 3.14, several local establishments will honor and celebrate the latest food craze.

Pie in Fremont:
The newest kid on the pie block, recently praised by the controversial Sheehan, this small shop serves both sweet and savory pies. To celebrate Pi Day, Pie will be open for exactly 3.14 hours (12 p.m.-3:14 p.m.), during which all hand pies will be, you guessed it, $3.14. Mini Minis will be sold three for $3.14. Way to pay homage to the number 3.14 in a multitude of ways.

High 5 Pie: Lauded as one of the 10 best places for pie by Bon Appetit, Dani Cone's Capitol Hill spot will catch ya on the flipside for $3.14. The handheld turnovers come in both the savory and sweet variety.

Morton's: Better known for steak and all things starchy and calorie-laden, Morton's wants a piece of the pie too. Slices of key lime pie, $3.14 all day Monday.

Cakespy: Hosting the first annual Seattle Pie Slam, Cakespy's Jessie Oleson celebrates Pi day with a writing and baking contest centered around the tasty treat. “It’s not just pie in the sky,” she says. “This crusty confection has inspired many a taste memory, and we’re ready to celebrate these stories at the Pie Slam!” Seattle Pie Slam is a collaborative effort between Oleson and Wendy Sykes, owner of the baking school Four and 20 Blackbirds. March 14, 6:30 p.m.//CakeSpy Shop (415 E Pine Street)//Free. RSVP Here

Art of the Pie: While technically, there are no Pi Day specials for Kate McDermott's coveted pie classes, we suggest you sign up for one of the few remaining spots. Named Food Rock Star of 2010 by Seattle Magazine and Best Cooking Class 2010 by Seattle Weekly, Kate's formula for pie crust based upon precise ratios will have you seeing stars and infinite pies in your baking future. Kate even shares this gem of a quote in reference to pi on her site: "The fattest knight at King Arthur's round table was Sir Circumference. He acquired his size from too much pi." Life according to Kate, "Be Happy, Make Pie."

Also of note, some consider March 14 "Steak and a BJ day." While Seattlest wholeheartedly supports celebration of this holiday as well, we feel that Portland might be better suited for establishments where both are accessible for purchase. Still, it's a damn fine meaty day.
