Shop Seattle: Kuhlman
A quick tip: nothing takes an outfit from natty to "no thanks" more quickly than an ill-fitting garment. As such, there are two options: get it right the first time, or get thee to a tailor.
Either way, you can get it at Kuhlman.
Part boutique, part old-school tailor shop, Kuhlman has been keeping Seattle looking sharp for over a decade. The high ceilings and exposed brick make the space feel roomy, while the impressive shelf containing bolts of luxurious materials add an air of craftsmanship. This isn't just a vendor--this is a place to get hand-made quality.
The shop, which is located between the "good" part of Belltown and the less-good part, features little necessities, like ties and cuff-links, as well as trendy threads by RVCA and Fred Perry, and Ben Sherman. There are also never-out-of-style button-downs, stylish hats, and some clean, urban apparel, as well.
And while the looks at Kuhlman are chic, they've definitely got a Seattle sensibility. That's because eponymous owner Scott Kuhlman, as a Western Washington grad, understands that what flies at Fashion Week doesn't necessarily get a pass in the Pacific Northwest.
"New York is a great fashion center, but Seattle is more subtle," he explained. A self-described vintage fan, Scott prefers classic shapes and materials. He also keeps his eye on what's happening down the coast.
"Hollywood actually influences fashion in Seattle more than anywhere else."
Stop into Kuhlman for the added quality of a tailored garment. And if you do insist on going off-the-rack, at least Scott can help you find a piece that actually fits.
