Nice Guys Finish Second: Bill Gates Loses 'World's Richest' Title Again
Proving that no good deed goes unpunished, Bill Gates' generosity is once again costing him the top spot atop Forbes' annual list of the world's richest people, being released Wednesday.
Experts all agree that the reason he has lost the illustrious title of World's Richest Man (or if we had our druthers, Earth's Most Flossin' ) is due to his overwhelming generosity to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has benefited from his largess to the tune of $28 billion dollars. The foundation is the largest in the United States and does many noble and unselfish deeds around the world.
The title will undoubtedly go to Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim, whose estimated worth is $53.5 billion dollars. In an act of poor gentlemanliness, he is dishing it out something nasty towards our hometown billionaire. He has given some to charity, but argues that his wealth is best used creating jobs and wealth by investing (read: making more money for himself) and "not by being Santa Claus." Yikes, dude. Turn the Scrooge down a notch will ya. Also, if Santa Claus gave away billions of dollars we would start believing again faster than you can say 'Ho Ho Ho'.
Rounding out the top three once again will likely be Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway who is estimated to be worth $47 billion dollars. Buffett is a co-contributor to the Gates Foundation, having given them $8 billion dollars since 2006.
While we imagine they all sleep pretty comfortably at night, Gates and Buffet can rest assured knowing they are trying to make positive change in the world. Slim maybe not so much. As for the soul-comforting that comes from giving back in immeasurable ways, money can't buy that.
