Starbucks at 40: Whoopie Pies and Health Products?

Starbucks, a small local coffee chain you may have heard of, celebrates its 40th anniversary tomorrow. CEO Howard Schultz will spend the day making frappuccinos at the Pike Place Market store and distributing Via samples. OK, that's a lie; he'll be ringing the closing bell on the NASDAQ tomorrow.

Schultz also sat down with USA today for an interview about the "java juggernaut." Some highlights--look for more Starbucks products and more growth in Asia. Schultz also said he is particularly intrigued by the "health and wellness" space, so plan on a future spent slugging Starbucks energy drinks before hitting the gym. The company will definitely be rolling out whoopie pies, cake pops (ie cake on sticks) and mini cupcakes in the near future, though we doubt local sweets-on-a-stick purveyor Dani Cone over at High 5 Pie is too worried about this.

Also, corporate HQ has a highly visible unfiltered Twitter feed so Schultz and other execs can wander over and see the good and the bad of what people are saying.

One bit of Starbucks news too local to make the USA Today interview--the Madison Park Starbucks (reportedly Schultz's own neighborhood store) will start serving beer and wine like its Olive Way sibling when it's done with its current renovation.

See a photo timeline of the 'Bucks over here and watch for Starbucks' new wordless logo to start circulating in the coming weeks.
