Nicholas Brendon Likes Pashminas, and Other Dispatches from Comicon
The 9th annual Emerald City Comicon is in full swing and Seattlest staffers are pausing to keep you posted.
So far, we've observed that...
1.) Kids love the Comicon. Kids. Love. Comicon.
2.) Steampunks are in full force. I attempted to photograph some sweet steampunk goggles, but the vendor informed me that they had "had problems with copying before" and that I was not allowed. Bummer, and also, what?
3.) Emerald City Comicon doesn't make the greatest picks for panel moderators. BJ from KISW talking about colonoscopy photos? Not funny. Totally awkward. Ken Schram introducing William Shatner? Not funny. Totally unnecessary. This is especially true when actors like Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes, who have known each other for a very long time, are more entertaining when they just talk amongst themselves.
4.) Blending in is easy. A furry tail, pair of ears, knit cap, or Star Wars t-shirt are really all you need. But if you're going in costume and want to be in good company, the most popular so far are Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn for ladies, and The Joker and Hellboy for men. The Doctor, from Doctor Who, is acceptable for both genders.
5.) Brent Spiner is really, really, very funny. He also uses an iPhone and does an excellent Patrick Stewart impression.
6.) Not only does Nicholas Brendon like pashminas (as mentioned in the title), he is also single, and always wanted to be a teen idol. Additionally, he has fantastic style - today, he was wearing a very chic blue plaid shirt with a matching solid blue tie. Snappy!
7.) Comicon is full of deep thoughts. We'll be posting a roundup truth-bombs soon so that you, too, can reap the benefit of William Shatner's brilliance.
8.) Fans are the experts. The actors may have been on set, but when pressed to remember the name of an episode or what season it was from, the fans inevitably had the answers. This was true for Trekkies and Buffy lovers.
9.) SoyJoy has poor taste in swag. Aside from inedible "fruit" bars, they are also offering string back-packs. String pack-backs which, it seems, multiply faster than tribbles. So far, we've encountered over 40. Yes, we're keeping tally.
10.) While comics are the focus, it's really more of a sci-fi and game convention. Love Link? Get to Comicon. Always wanted to be a Jedi? You'll find like-minded folks at Comicon. It's a very welcoming place - even when everyone is jostling to take photos and stumbling over each other.
Stay tuned for more information, photos, and more. And if you've got a tip, >Tweet at us, follow us, or comment. Sarah Lloyd, Chris Lynch and myself will be around today, too.
Until then, live long and prosper.
