Can't Miss It: The Weekend
LIVE FROM DAISY: Photographer, musician and filmmaker John Cohen has been around. Over the years, he's made over a dozen films about American folk music, co-founded The New Lost City Ramblers, and managed to snap candids of everyone from Jack Kerouac to Bob Dylan. Tonight, he screens his newest film Roscoe Holcomb: From Daisy, Kentucky to the Grand Illusion Cinema alongside two of his earlier films: Sara and Maybelle and The End of an Old Song. Cohen will then take questions before strapping on a guitar and kicking up dirt with old-time string band The Dust Busters. It will be a fine night of living history.
Friday 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. // Grand Illusion Cinema // $10 - $20
MAGMA FESTIVAL: Hollow Earth Radio's annual MAGMA Festival kicks off today with a bang heard round the world. Which is not that hard to do, when you consider how little a reverbation will attenuate around a tectonic shell. But we digress! Tonight, Vera Project welcomes Spurm, Kristin Allen-Zito, and Pwrfl Power, among others. Then, on Saturday, MAGMA will commandeer a Light Rail Train, putting Toy Boats, Jordan O’Jordan, Walrus Machine, and The Beaconettes in front of transit customers, before inviting them to walk along to the afterparty at Radar Hair and Records featuring Ya Ho Wa 33. And if that wasn't enough, on Sunday, Magma covers Beck's classic One Foot in the Grave with performances by, but not limited to, Pica Beats, Cock & Swan, and 1985. Whew! This is only the first week, too. Better pace ourselves.
Friday 8:00 p.m. // Vera Project // $9 with club card / $10 without
Saturday 5:30 p.m. // International District Light Rail Station // Free music, pay transit fare before boarding
Saturday 8:00 p.m. // Radar Hair and Records //$8-$20 sliding scale
Sunday 7:00 p.m. // Hollow Earth Radio // $5
MARCH FOURTH: MarchFourth Marching Band is a Portland-based band and performance troupe. More of a traveling circus slash dance party, really. With saxophones, trombones, trumpets, a drum/percussion corps, stilt-walkers, dancers, their own color guard and clowns, they are a colorful midway with a rocking soundtrack. Maybe you should watch the video? Now realize that sprawling mass of music is going to be wedged into the Tractor Tavern for an evening of explosive music that will lift you to your feet. Probably carry you to the door if you're not careful.
Saturday 9:00 p.m. // Tractor Tavern // $15
