Can't Miss It: The Weekend
SENSUAL STIMULUS: For over 10 years, The Mutaytor has been refining one of the most explosive and theatrical pieces of traveling theater you've never heard of. Employing an 11 piece modern analog and electronic dance orchestra, peppered with 15 performance artists, The Mutaytor spins a circus sideways through their technicolor subconscious to create an evocative traveling act. They appear tonight at the Crocodile with Flowmotion and The Glass Notes to kick off the the 11th annual Summer Meltdown, a multi day grassroots music festival that cultivates social connections and a sustainable future. If it all gets to be too much, breathe deeply and remember we're all on the wave. Ride it out.
Friday 8:00 p.m. // The Crocodile // $15
YO SQUARED: Aspring Dick Smothers! Better hope your act is honed, because the Seventh Annual Pacific Northwest Yo-Yo Championships is this Saturday at the Seattle Center House. Championship level yo-yo players will compete for the title of Pacific Northwest Regional Champion and a spot in the finals of the National Yo-Yo Contest held in October in Chico, CA. Registration takes place from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning and there is no charge to enter or watch. There is a Sport Division trick ladder for those working on variations of Rocking the Baby, or put your skils to music in the Championship Division that features freestyle yo-yo play soundtracked as you please. It promises to be a sweet day of string winding, dog walking, and cat skinning. We're pretty sure all of those are yo-yo related.
Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. // Seattle Center, Center House // FREE
SOUND OFF: ROUND TWO: We've been previewing the bands throughout the week, and now it's time for the event proper: the second semi-final of the 10th Annual EMP's Sound Off! Battle of the Underage Bands. Come cheer Chinook Jargon, Electricity and Its Double, Fit for Hounds, and Kung Foo Grip as they compete for a spot in the finals. The winner will join first round winners Northern Departure and two bands yet to be determined for a swag bag of amazing prizes and bragging rights. Keep your eyes on us here at Seattlest; you can bet we'll be covering the entire competition.
Saturday 7:00 p.m. // EMP/SFM // $10 ($7 students / EMP|SFM members)
DON'T MESS: You may remember us talking a while back about local drum crew Titanium Sporkestra raising money to travel to Austin for HonkTx. Congratulations are due, because they made their nut and then some. This Saturday, they give their thanks with a BBQ cook-out and performance buffet of Seattle's best warped entertainers. God's Favorite Beefcake. The Mongrel Jews. The Harlequin Hipsters. And, for taste, San Fran's Esmerelda Strange. It's going to be a wondrous evening of temptation. Go ahead and fill your plate.
