Can't Miss It: The Weekend
COUCH W/O CUSHIONS: A cushionless couch is mostly just a frame, which is not a bad analogy for the musical improvisation collective Couch without Cushions. They will be performing drum circle style at the Greenwood Collective during the art walk and inviting any and all to join. Bring guitars, wooden frogs, beatboxing, poetry, a train whistle, bells, dinginglings, kazoos, or a story. One of the artists is building a giant sheet-fort and is trying to make it two stories tall. Bring sheets. All of this is true. What better way to greet the weekend than with an epic pretend/creation session with strangers? We know of none.
Friday 6:00 p.m. // Greenwood Collective // FREE
SOUND OFF: ROUND ONE: We've been previewing the bands throughout the week, and now it's time for the event proper: the first semi-final of the 10th Annual EMP's Sound Off! Battle of the Underage Bands. Come cheer Tomten, squeal for Ambulance, travel with Northern Departure, and celebrate Young Pacific. The winner of Saturday's event will compete in the finals at the end of the month. Keep your eyes on us here at Seattlest; you can bet we'll be covering the entire competition.
Saturday 7:00 p.m. // EMP/SFM // $10 ($7 students / EMP|SFM members)
APOCALYPSE SURVIVAL: When the Zombie uprising comes, probably around December next year, not everyone is going to make it through. That may sound depressing, but the truth isn't always uplifting. Thankfully, we've got the inside track on how to situate yourself as a survivor and not a wretched braineater. The trick is knowing how to care for yourself, your belongings, and your family once the system fails. This Saturday, the Hands On! Community Skills Fair offers primers in all sorts of invaluable DIY skills. Sign up now for a workshop on bread baking, pruning, bike repair, growing veggies, canning and much more! (Sorry, but it looks like Defend Yourself From the Undead is already full.) The workshops are free, and the information invaluable.
Saturday, February 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. // Meadowbrook and Ravenna-Eckstein Community Centers // FREE
SAVE A MUSICIAN: The Tractor Tavern hosts an evening of roots, folk, and Americana music played by uninsured musicians. Normally, we wouldn't bring up such an uncomfortable truth--that musicians are often without a safety net if something goes south with their health--but all the proceeds tonight go to MusiCares, a GRAMMY sponsored program that provides assistance to people in the music industry without health insurance. That's performers like The Blackberry Bushes Stringband, Boys of Greenwood Glen, Squirrel Butter, The Tallboys, Rachel Mae, Ben Gilmer & The Sidearms, Gertrude's Hearse, and Hot Club Sandwich. These incredibly talented musicians are exactly the ones who need the MusiCares program. Support them by spending an evening in their company.
Sunday 6:30 p.m. // Tractor Tavern // $10
