Can't Miss It: The Weekend

THE NATHAN HALE SOCK HOP: Settled in nicely at the bottom of your dial, pulsing with its irresistible signature of chopped hi-hat sixteenth notes, rabid bass lines, kick drum woofer exercises, and—on Sunday—gospel, is C-89.5 FM, the official radio station of Nathan Hale High School, national dancefloor tastemaker. This year marks four decades of student-run programming, divas-in-training, and the artful manipulation of its round the clock tick-tock heartbeat. To celebrate, C89.5 is taking over Neighbors with performances from Brooklyn Bounce, H-Boogie, Niamh Egan, Lisa Dank, and Melakai. Congratulations, C89.5, here’s to another 40.
Saturday 5:30 p.m. // Neighbours // $8.95 (All-ages), VIP section (21 and over) $50

COME LAY WITH ME AND BE MY LOVE: Not one of the members in Campfire OK plays the instrument they originally studied. It's the sort of evolution that not only makes sense but seems necessary when listening to the band's debut Strange Like We Are. Subtle decisions in the arrangements describe the unique in terms of the familiar, like an orchard’s long rows patterned with fruit. Or the sweet lyrical eggs purring softly with nesting songs; the fibrous brass, supporting piano, frayed banjo, and wooden guitar gently woven in tightly chorded melodic knots. It’s alive and pastoral and happening this Saturday at Columbia City Theater. Related: our Campfire OK "Listen Up!" can be found here.
Saturday 9 p.m. // Columbia City Theater // $10

PLAY SONG HISTORY: We’re pretty with it, us here at Seattlest, but man sometimes we are way behind the trends, especially among the youth—we’re talking 6 - 13 year olds—where the adoption and abandonment speed is breakneck. So hopefully you can excuse us for missing the bubbling harbingers that now brings us Parlor Re-enactors, where karaoke meets dress-up for a little historical fact-checking. Kids get done up in period costumes from 13th-18th centuries and sing the popular songs and do the dances of the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and American colonial eras. Our local chapter is run by Shulamit Kleinerman, who is accompanied by local performers on violin, vielle, viola da gamba, hurdy-gurdy, and more. This Sunday, her crew will be representing at Town Hall, showing off their boss beats, pointy kicks, and round vowels. If you’re curious about where the kids are going, check out the past.
Sunday 1 - 2 p.m. // Town Hall Seattle // $10 - $15

NUDE LEAVES: The final performance of Naked Girls Reading, a live, monthly salon featuring lovely women reading aloud in their all-together, comes and goes this weekend. Something so pure was too beautiful to last; be glad you have this opportunity to observe its passing from this cruel, cruel earth. This performance will feature Jesse Belle-Jones, Polly Wood, Heidi Von Haught and a collective sign as the final curtain falls. NGR supports the Seattle Public Library and encourages audiences to bring books or monetary donations for Seattle's libraries. Please go on ahead, we’ll be over for a moment, swooning.
Sunday 7 p.m. // Oddfellows Building // $15-$22 (18+)
