A Cinematic Smorgasbord: Nordic Lights Film Festival

Scandinavians are so hot right now. Stieg Larsson’s literary trilogy is blowin’ up. Robyn’s musical trilogy has been racking up awards left and right. Viggo Mortensen was in that one movie, The Road. ABBA still kicks ass. So there’s a lot to celebrate about Nordic culture. This weekend provides a fantastic chance for you to experience all the humor and passion of Scandinavian films at the Nordic Lights Film Festival, which is hosted by the Nordic Heritage Museum at SIFF Cinema.

As we mentioned here, the Second Annual Nordic Lights Film Festival is happening this weekend beginning on Friday, January 7 and continuing on through January 9. Friday’s kick-off event features a screening of some of the region’s finest and funniest short films, followed by “sexy Nordic shorts” (my oh my!).

Saturday’s highlights include a portrait of Steig Larsson, whose Millennium Triology (The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo; The Girl Who Played with Fire; and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) has become one of the most talked about trilogy of novels and films in the past couple years. The film, Millenium—The Story, chronicles the author’s work and sudden death at the age of 50, before his first novel was published. You can also catch Troubled Water, which tells the story of Jan Thomas, a released prisoner whose crime remains a mystery.

Sunday’s screenings look to be equally fascinating: The Future of Hope from Iceland helps demonstrate the increasing need for sustainable models of living in the country as well as appropriate media representation of Iceland. Country Wedding (also from Iceland) is a charming road trip flick; Norway’s Home Boys illustrates a burgeoning hiphop scene; When a Man Comes Home, a Danish film, chronicles the homecoming of an opera singer to a small town.

It’s all taking place at SIFF Cinema at McCaw Hall this weekend. Tickets are just $7 for Nordic Heritage Museum and SIFF members. General Admission is $10. You can purchase tickets at SIFF Cinema Box Office or by calling 206.464.5830.
